(KYTX) - An East Texas child diagnosed with a rare birth defect will be lighting the Christmas tree in the Tyler Square this week.
Children's Miracle Network named Will an ambassador for the state of Texas. Will is the Trinity Mother Frances Hospital's first patient to ever be selected as the ambassador for Texas.
The distinction celebrates children who have overcome great physical obstacles. Will Butts was born with a condition that affects the development of his hands and feet.
“Will was born with hand and feet differences, but he is really a kid like any other kid.” said Katie Butts, Will's mother. “He sees a lot of doctors and has had a handful of surgeries, but he goes to school, writes beautiful cursive, runs hard and plays tennis.”
As a part of the Children's Miracle Network tour, Will recently visited Washington D.C. and Disney World in Orlando. He spent time with Miss America and First Lady Michelle Obama and even played with the First Dogs, Bo and Sunny.
At today's press conference, Mayor Martin Heines announced that the energetic seven-year old will be lighting the tree at the annual Tyler Christmas Parade. The Christmas tree lighting will take place after the parade, which starts on December 4 at 6:00 p.m.
