‘Drop it’ is something we should be looking to teach all our new dogs. Just because they could pick something up in the house, whether it be something we want them to have or not have and we need to be able to take it off them straight away. We’ve got three different things we’re going to use today. We’re going to use a plastic bottle, we’ve got a toy and we’ve got a bag full of some stones. What we’re going to get the dogs to do is we’re going to get them pick up one of the objects. Okay, I’m going to keep the dog on the lead so that they can’t pick it up and run away with it. And then we’re going to offer them a swap. So whether it be a treat or with another object. So the dog comes in to us, we’re going to ask them to pretty much swap for whatever we are trying to give them, and we’re going to take the object away.
We’re trying to get the dog to work out that it’s okay for us as a the human or handler to be able to take away whatever the dog has. By giving the swap or the reward as soon as the dog’s given it up, this is going to make it very comfortable for the dog to be able to bring us things, whether it be something that’s good for them or bad for them.
