These women wear pearls around their necks. But for them, it's more than just a fashion statement. The pearls represent a promise to help women and children needing medical care in our community.
The Pearls and Promises event has been funding women's services for a decade.
Felicia Adams, is on the women's board at Trinity Mother Frances. "What it has done is open up access to all women.. No matter what their insurance is, no matter what their ability to pay. All women have access to prenatal care and delivery services," she said.
One of these services is provided at the Trinity Mother Frances Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU, which is also funded by the gala.
Prior to Trinity Mother Frances opening the NICU, many of these children had to be transported to Dallas or Houston. Now, they can stay right here in our community and receive state-of-the-art care.
In the past the gala's fund has gone towards the revamping of the hospitals mother and baby unit.
This year, the women's board is focusing on another project; new pediatric clinic.
It's so important for our community to support under-served children of East Texas, said Beth Whitney, the Co-chair of the Gala. "That's what we're all about now this year with this new clinic. There will be uninsured children and also medicaid so it's gonna be a facility that all of East Texas can be very proud of."
